Over ten years ago at the request of our members the NZRDA arranged for a specifically tailored Indemnity Insurance scheme for RMOs. The cover (up to $4 million each – not that anyone has ever needed anything like that much!) is for all residents including house officers, SHOs and registrars and can be continued into general practice or life as a consultant (at higher levels of cover for obvious reasons!).
Furthermore the scheme provides cover for Accident & Medical Centres, GP and Hospital locums and we can arrange cover for the UK, Australia and other overseas destinations on request.
The policy has full tail cover. This means that if you were insured at the time the incident happened, you will be covered; no matter how long ago the incident occurred.
NZRDA has also negotiated a system whereby you can elect to have the DHB pay your indemnity directly. This saves the hassle of having to pay the money upfront and then getting it reimbursed, particularly at the start of your career when you may be stretched financially.

The Indemnity scheme is provided by New Zealand Medical Professionals. We recommend you use this scheme for your indemnity cover: when you are completing those endless forms for the DHBs, simply tick or confirm that you want to be covered by the RDA scheme. We will arrange the rest and you will receive confirmation of cover shortly afterwards
